Community integration of immigrants and social innovation: a case study in Montreal

Abstract
This article focuses on the integration of immigrant populations in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Using a case study approach, it examines the integration of immigrants, particularly those in vulnerable situations and affected by the precariousness caused by transformations in the labour market, through the actions of grassroots. The article argues that an approach to integration based on respect for immigrants and the safeguarding of their cultural identity could contribute to the realization and strengthening of the main features of what has been called the “Quebec model of development”, namely partnership, the presence of the social economy, community participation and social innovation. In this text, integration is analyzed from a geosocial perspective, where social capital is essential to understanding the cultural dynamics that interact on and with the territory. Greater political and financial recognition of the role played by community-based organizations involved in immigrant integration through employment insertion projects, support services or cultural safety activities is becoming increasingly necessary, especially in the current context of growing immigrant stigmatization and wider social divisions.
