Urban Greenness and Citizen Comfortability: A Systematic Review of Environmental Health, and Socio-Spatial Pathways in Urban Systems

Abstract

This study synthesizes existing literature on the relationship between urban greenness and citizen comfortability, focusing on environmental, health, and socio-spatial dimensions. Rapid urbanization has intensified environmental stressors such as urban heat islands, air pollution, and declining biodiversity, prompting increase attention to nature-based solutions. Using a systematic narrative review guided by PRISMA protocols, relevant studies published between 2000 and 2025 were analysed from interdisciplinary databases, including Wed of Science, Scopus, PubMed, and Google Scholar. Findings reveal that urban green spaces such as parks, street trees, and green infrastructure play a critical role in mitigating environmental stressors while enhancing mental health, physical activity, and social cohesion. Evidence across regions, including the United States, Nigeria, and South Africa, demonstrates consistent associations between green space exposure and reduced stress, improved psychological well-being, and enhanced microclimate conditions. However, the benefits of urban greenness are highly context-dependent, with factors such as accessibility, quality, and maintenance significantly influencing outcomes. The review also identifies key methodological limitations, including the dominance of cross-sectional studies and insufficient representation of marginalized populations. It highlights the need for longitudinal and mixed-methods approaches to better understand long-term and equity-based impacts. Furthermore, participatory governance and inclusive planning are essential for maximizing the social and environmental benefits of green infrastructure.

Abiodun Ayooluwa Areola, Ph.D. is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Geography at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. He is a geographer and geospatial scientist whose research focuses on urban environmental change, urban greenness, socio-spatial dynamics, land-use and land-cover change, and environmental sustainability in African cities. His work integrates Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, historical spatial analysis, and socio-environmental approaches to examine the relationships between urban transformation, environmental conditions, and human well-being.

Dr. Areola holds a Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Ibadan, an M.Sc. in Environmental Science from the University of Botswana, an M.Sc. in Geographic Information Systems from the University of Ibadan, and a B.Sc. in Geography from the University of Ilorin. His doctoral research examined the historical transformation and depletion of green spaces in Ibadan Metropolis. His research and consultancy experience includes urban environmental change, food safety, land-use and land-cover dynamics, forestry, agro-climatic resilience, and the socio-economic and environmental consequences of policy and resource-use changes in Nigeria and other African contexts. He is also an alumnus of the MyCOE/SERVIR West Africa Fellowship and has contributed to research supported by USAID, UK PACT, and FAO. His current research interests include urban greenness, environmental health, urban resilience, historical urban transformation, and geospatial approaches to sustainable African cities.
