Transport and mobility in Dakar metropolitan area: challenges and opportunities of a changing system
Main Article Content
Abstract
The rapid urbanisation of the Dakar metropolitan region is leading to complex mobility issues, due to increasing densification and urban sprawl, exacerbated by the rise in car ownership. This article highlights a gap in our understanding of the interactions between formal and informal transport practices, and their socio-economic, environmental and institutional impacts. Using a methodology combining a literature review, analysis of official reports and interviews with local stakeholders conducted between 2017 and 2020 - as part of our doctoral research - the article analyses the challenges and opportunities for the region's transport system. The results show that the hybridisation of transport practices requires a reassessment of governance and funding strategies to promote a sustainable and inclusive mobility system.
