Noise Pollution in Cameroon: Socio-Health Effects Linked to Noise Levels in the Fifth District of Yaoundé
Main Article Content
Abstract
Noise pollution, which is rapidly increasing, has major consequences on both the environment and human health. Noise nuisances stem primarily from music bars, revivalist churches, and road traffic. These noise sources induce physiopathological effects, cognitive impairments, and psychosocial impacts. The objective of this study is to highlight the health and social repercussions caused by noise nuisances within the municipality of Yaounde V. The identification of pathologies associated with noise pollution relies on a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative data. This methodology integrates literature reviews, field observations, and semi-structured interviews conducted with households and managers of drinking establishments. The findings indicate that the primary sources of noise pollution originate from drinking establishments, revivalist churches, road traffic, and artisanal workshops. Regarding health impacts, sleep disturbance constitutes the main reported effect, affecting 61% of the surveyed residents, followed by tinnitus at 41% and general annoyance at 40%. Consequently, sleep disturbances represent the most prevalent disorder, followed by tinnitus, annoyance, reduced concentration, and hearing impairments.
