Between exclusion and subsistence. The settlement of sub-Saharan migrants in Casablanca.

Abstract
Casablanca, a millionaire and prosperous city, remains a veritable “meeting point” for an eclectic mix of profiles. In keeping with its hospitable nature, since the early 20th century it has welcomed Muslims, Jews and Europeans to its old quarters. In recent years, Casablanca has been confronted with a new kind of guest: sub-Saharan migrants, whose presence is increasingly visible in its neighborhoods. A 2021 HCP study, based on a sample of 3,000 migrants, reveals that just over half of them wish to remain in Morocco, calling into question the hypothesis of transit migration and underlining the urgent need to rethink the integration of sub-Saharan migration in Moroccan cities. According to our observations, migrants group together in communities and choose to live in neighborhoods offering moderate rents. Alternative housing options include renting rooms for several people, or individual rooms in so-called social buildings. The encampment, a precarious figure, remains an attractive alternative, as it brings together people with similar vulnerabilities. However, despite their fragile situation, migrants are quick to develop resilience mechanisms, seriously questioning the legitimacy of their much-criticized presence in the city.
